Fashion icon and interior designer Iris Apfel dies at 102

  • March 9, 2024

Iris Apfel, the fashion icon who got her start as an interior designer, died on March 1 at her home in Palm Beach, Florida. Apfel’s passing was confirmed by Lori Sale, her commercial agent. She was 102 years old.

“Working alongside her was the honor of a lifetime,” Sale said in a statement. “I will miss her daily calls, always greeted with the familiar question: What have you got for me today? Testament to her insatiable desire to work. She was a visionary in every sense of the word. She saw the world through a unique lens—one adorned with giant, distinctive spectacles that sat atop her nose.”

Apfel (née Iris Barrel) was born on August 29, 1921 into a family of Russian Jewish emigres. As a young child she lived in Astoria, Queens, but was raised on a farm outside Manhattan. Her father ran a glass mirror business and her mother owned a fashion boutique. Apfel began her fine jewelry collection during her childhood trips to Greenwich Village.

As a teenager, Apfel began thinking about a career in interior design after her father was apfel-obituary/”hired to install mirrors at actress Elsie de Wolfe’s apartment in the Plaza Hotel. Apfel’s father brought her to meet de Wolfe at her apartment, where she said she was mesmerized. “I was in my early teens, and of course my eyes almost popped,” Apfel once told designer Hutton Wilkinson“She had Blu Blu [her poodle] in her lap…and Elsie would sit there like she was holding court. She would never get out of bed.”

Apfel later studied art history at New York University and then received an art degree from the University of Wisconsin. After finishing her art degree, Apfel returned to New York. There, she got her

Tampa Connect Fashion Week highlights local fashion designers

  • March 3, 2024

TAMPA, Fla. — “I think it’s a really big deal, and I think it’s unique,” said Fatima Elkott, co-founder of Conscious Community Connector.

During a sunny downtown Tampa afternoon, local fashion designers and models walked a runway outside of Visit Tampa Bay.

It’s part of an effort to showcase these artists ahead of a bigger fashion show coming up in March with Tampa Connect.

“There are so many designers that do not get a chance to really showcase their style in Tampa,” said local designer Stephanie Jackson.

Tampa Connect Fashion Week is a fundraiser for the Tampa Junior Heights Civic Association, a grassroots nonprofit that helps provide after-school care, summer programs and more to kids in the area.

For Naya Young, seeing this preview really showcases Tampa Bay’s creatives.

“It’s so beautiful. It’s like a melting pot of so many different people, cultures, personalities. Today, we are doing a downtown activation fashion pop-up event. Some of the designers actually have some of their designs out on display,” said Young, executive director of the THJCA.

The fashion show is full of designers trying to get their start in the industry.

“We have servers, digital designers. I think it’s a conglomerate of a lot of different experiences, ages, backgrounds. That’s what makes it so awesome,” said Elkott.

“For me, I can see something like a tablecloth, and it will tell me it doesn’t want to be a tablecloth,” Jackson said. “What I’m wearing today is a tablecloth, but it wanted to be a dress. So I made it into a dress.”

The Fashion Week kicks off on March 8 and goes all weekend long with three events across the Tampa Bay area. You can find out more by clicking here.

“I think it’s just that sense of community being with people who

Kansas City-area fashion designer scores with custom Chiefs coats

  • January 28, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City knows a thing or two about going viral, especially when it comes to the Chiefs.

After Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes went viral for wearing designer Kristin Juszczyk’s Chiefs-inspired jackets, one local designer was inspired to put his own spin on the re-purposed jersey trend, something he thought was an incredible idea for the fashion world.

“My friend made a post saying, ‘Oh, Sheraz can definitely make a rendition of it,’ and I was like, ‘Of course I can,’” said Sheraz Pompey, a Kansas City area designer.

VOICE FOR EVERYONE | Share your voice with KSHB 41’s Rachel Henderson

Pompey has been a designer for 11 years and is a co-owner of The Blueprint KC, a family-owned one-stop shop for clothing, makeup and custom designs that he and his two sisters run in Grandview.

He says he hadn’t even considered making custom puffer jackets until people online started asking about what local designers in Kansas City could make them.

So, he got to work.

“I didn’t know it was going to be such a viral thing; I’m not mad about it at all,” Pompey said.

Before he knew it, he was going viral on social media and getting at least 30 requests for his custom-made coats — which was at least 20 more than he intended to make.

“I initially started off wanting to just make 10,” Pompey said. “I had to stop it at one point ‘cause I had to mark it as sold out because I only wanted to do 10.”

While 10 sounds like a small amount, there’s hours of work that goes into each jacket. Pompey says in total, each jacket takes seven hours of total.

Curious what fashion students are designing? You can check out their work Nov. 14

  • November 18, 2023
Fashion For Life

By WVUA 23 Digital Reporter Josie Wahl

Eight students at the University of Alabama are presenting their fashion designs at the Bama Theatre Nov. 14 at 6 p.m.

UA Apparel and Textile Design instructor Brian Taylor is hosting the fashion show and said his students have been conceptualizing their designs since May and working on them in earnest since August.

“We wanted an opportunity for them to showcase everything they have learned in our program,” Taylor said. “A senior collection that will represent their style, their point of views, and their design philosophy.”

Students are told in the spring to prepare for the show. That summer, they sketch ideas, look for the perfect fabrics and research trends. When fall classes start in August, it’s time to build their patterns and focus on fitting models.

“This all culminates into a Capstone experience which is Fashion For Life,” Taylor said. “It’s part of the course for that senior class. It’s a night where students can show their work to their family and friends and have that live audience experience.”

The Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa is the perfect space for the show thanks to its professional lighting and sound system, Taylor said.

“No matter where you’re sitting, you will have a good seat for the show,” Taylor said.

There is no overall theme for the show, but designs fall into professional or cocktail categories, he said.

Students in the show and their collection names are:

  • Grace Carmack: Dress and Under Duress
  • Julia Wolfe Deters: Illusions
  • Madie Hollingsworth: Cadence
  • Shakira Lewis: Ren Affaire
  • Linda Rose Manginelli: Compassion
  • Abbie Saul: Delirium
  • Lindsay Stock: Infinite Individuality
  • Claudia J. Wolfe: Camino

After the show, designers and the models showcasing their collections will be in the lobby of the theater to discuss their designs with anyone interested.

Tommy Bogo is wrapping up some design work in his Los Angeles office while preparing for a long trip to Japan to meet with power players in the international fashion world. Despite a hectic schedule, the 29-year-old designer is excited to spend some time on Zoom with a magazine from his East Bay hometown, as Bogo takes pride in the region that informs his sense of style and his practical, functional clothing.

“The East Bay has a very DIY mentality,” says Bogo. “There is an effortless style that Bay Area people have. It’s about wearing what makes you feel comfortable and proud to wear.”

Bogo grew up in Oakland and got his start screen-printing T-shirts and selling them out of his locker at Oakland Technical High School. He says he was greatly influenced by his parents, who are both fine artists. His mother is Carrie Lederer, the former longtime curator of Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek’s Lesher Center for the Arts. “I spent my entire life [at Bedford Gallery],” says Bogo. “When I was just 3 or 4, I was the kid playing with toy trains on the gallery floor as exhibitions were being installed.”

Runway models showcase Bogo’s designs at Paris Fashion Week.

Bogo says that his parents’ hands-on approach to art installations rubbed off on his own sensibilities. “I must have noticed how hard they worked and how important it is to control a creative vision,” he says. “Even though we work with big production companies at Paris Fashion Week or Fashion Week in New York, I still need to be hands-on with the little details, whether it is lighting or music cues.”

Bogo launched his workwear-inspired brand, Tombogo, just before

Alia Bhatt Bespoke Ring Met

  • May 23, 2023

brides

One of the most coveted actors, especially in terms of her celebritydom, in recent times has been Alia Bhatt. Her recent appearance at the Met Gala cemented the fact for anyone who had any semblance of doubt. What’s more, is that over the last few years, the 30 year old actor is not only known for the magic she’s continuously creating on-screen but also off of it with her unparalleled style. She’s the epitome of the modern young Indian woman – a narrative more and more brands are working towards having to be able to relate to their new-age female audiences. So, when Alia Bhatt was announced as the new ambassador of Malabar Gold & Diamonds – a brand that has been catering to the jewellery needs of contemporary Indian women – it seemed just perfect.

brides

Alia’s personal style is feminine yet not flowery. Powerful yet relatable. Stylish and extremely sophisticated. She’s also someone who has almost always turned to jewellery to accessorise her looks. Just take her Met look for instance. The actor wore an exaggerated basque waist ball gown, completely embellished in pearls, designed by designer Prabal Gurung. And though the outfit itself was breathtaking, her jewellery was having its own moment, especially the ring she wore on the index finger of her right hand.

The ring in question was from Malabar Gold & Diamonds, and was custom designed for her by fine jewellery designer Alice Cicolini. It boasts of a central diamond that is concentrically surrounded with several other smaller diamonds and finally a ring of pearls to complete the piece and tie the piece with the theme and to pay homage to the designer Karl Lagerfeld whose love for pearls is, at this point, a matter of public knowledge. The ring became the

Rochester fashion designer promotes ‘leveled up’ look – Post Bulletin

  • May 6, 2023

Fashion is Daniel Johnson’s business.

Johnson is the owner and designer of Levels LLC, an urban/streetwear fashion business with retail stores at the Apache Mall in Rochester and the Mall of America in Bloomington.

Daniel discovered his affinity for fashion design by way of his music management profession. Once a hip-hop recording artist and concert promoter in the music entertainment industry, Daniel now dedicates his time to Levels.

Daniel’s latest ‘turtle and hare’ collection gives nod to his perception of life: Sometimes you move slower, sometimes you move faster, but we are still all on the same track.

In his spare time, Daniel enjoys spending time with his family, vacationing, fitness training, writing music, and looking for life’s next adventure. The words he lives by are “Get busy living or get busy dying. Just get busy.”

Describe your style.

Simple but unique, casual, ‘less is more.’

What incited you to launch a streetwear line/store?

My father was a model and fashion designer, and my mother was a beautician who owned her own salon and their entrepreneurial spirit was kindled in me early on. I was compelled to design a line with meaning and that all walks of life could relate to and wear with confidence. After several trials, I have been able to evolve the brand and it is now a sought-after choice of clothing that I continue to build and expand upon.

How does your business impact the way you choose to dress?

I must dress for success every day. Whether I am working at the stores, attending events/networking, or at the park with my kids, I am a reflection of the brand and I never know what opportunity I might be blessed with that day. I always want to ensure that I am representing the value and message
