Fashion’s ‘disrupters’ aren’t so disruptive after all

  • August 30, 2022

At the start of the pandemic, Katherine Simpson pressed pause on her Rent the Runway subscription. But recently the San Francisco-based labour union communications specialist resumed the service, which allows her to rent up to eight pieces of clothing and accessories for $144 per month. “Living in a city my wife and I have very little closet space, so to be able to return items that take up a lot of room, like outerwear, is really useful for us,” she explains.

Rent the Runway needs her. By the end of 2020 nearly two-thirds of its 134,000 customers had abandoned its monthly rental service, forcing the company to cut costs by 51 per cent and lay off or furlough half its staff. The 13-year-old company’s shares are presently hovering around $5.34, down from the October initial public offering price of $21 per share.

Once billed as a disrupter to fast fashion — “I plan to put Zara out of business,” chief executive Jennifer Hyman told online trade publication Glossy in 2017 — Rent the Runway is part of a coterie of companies that launched about a decade ago billed as the next Gap (Everlane), LensCrafters owner EssilorLuxottica (Warby Parker), Estée Lauder (Glossier) or eBay for designer luxury (The RealReal). With slick branding and a knack for recruiting new customers on social media, these online-native businesses were treated — and funded — like technology companies, promising vast audiences, fast growth and lower operational costs than incumbents saddled with expensive stores and “middle men”.

A decade on and a slew of IPOs later — online luxury consignment website The RealReal went public in June 2019, followed by peer-to-peer resale platforms Poshmark and ThredUp, geek-chic eyewear-maker Warby Parker, Rent the Runway and sustainability-branded shoemaker Allbirds in 2021 — that vision has yet to

Splash play, impressive adjustment and mental improvements highlight Christian Watson’s return

  • August 30, 2022

A splash play in an 11-on-11 period, “perfect” execution on an adjustment from Aaron Rodgers and daily improvement on the mental side highlighted the first few days back on the practice field for Green Bay Packers rookie receiver Christian Watson.

On Monday, Watson skied to catch a downfield pass from Jordan Love to set up the game-winning field goal for the second-team offense during a two-minute drill. If nothing else, it was the first truly impressive play from the rookie receiver during his first two practices of team periods.

“He made a nice play in the two minute,” Rodgers said Monday. “I thought he was pretty good yesterday, pretty good today.”

Rodgers said Watson asks good questions and cares about getting it right. Coach Matt LaFleur said the team can “feel his size and speed out there.”

The commitment mentally and rare combo of size and athleticism give Watson a chance to make up ground in a hurry.

“I enjoy his approach,” Rodgers said.

Watson, the 34th overall pick in the 2022 draft, missed the first two weeks of training camp while recovering from a knee surgery and then only did individual drills during his first week back off the PUP list.

While Watson is playing catchup in terms of on-field reps, Rodgers is making it a priority to throw him the football during team periods and challenge him in terms of adjustments in and out of the huddle.

The idea is to make the rookies think on the fly. Mistakes made “full speed” now are fine.

And it’s paying off early. On Monday, Watson gained a chunk of trust from the four-time MVP when he did the right thing on a quick adjustment.

“The thing I’ve seen with him is just, mentally, the improvement from day to day,”

Never, ever wear your running shoes to squat or deadlift in the gym

  • August 30, 2022

As a regular runner and TechRadar’s resident fitness and wellbeing editor, I’m in the privileged position of getting to test a lot of the best running shoes available. From shoes designed for fast-paced 10ks to shoes engineered for marathon runners, we get to test the latest in exercise footwear technology.

Cushioned midsoles, breathable sweat-wicking uppers, reactive foam outsoles for extra energy return… you name it, we’ve had it. Even other dedicated workout shoes engineered for CrossFit and HIIT workouts, or all-rounders like the Lululemon Chargefeel, offer reactive foam-cushioned soles to help with explosive movements such as burpees.

However, a couple of times a week, I eschew all this fancy footwear tech and I leave the highly-engineered hooves at home. Instead, I lace up a pair of beaten-up Vans, which have probably seen close to a decade of use, and hit the gym in those instead. These things are practically falling apart, and frankly unfit to wear in polite society, but they’re the perfect sartorial choice for the squat rack.

When you wear a running shoe, the bottom of your feet is more often than not protected by a midsole and outsole comprised of foam of various densities, occasionally accompanied by a plate of carbon or metal to help the shoe pop back into shape after flexing. Some are more springy than others, but unless you’re going for a barefoot style of running, your running shoe is likely to have some sort of squishy base that’s thicker at the heel than the toe.

If you’re lifting weights, especially with compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, or bent-over rows, this is bad. All that sophisticated technology designed to protect your heel has nothing to do except give your feet an unstable surface here, the foam acting a bit like a quagmire.

Men Of Fashion Are Claiming Cocktails As The New Menswear Accessory

  • August 29, 2022

In the category of menswear, aesthetic comes with his understanding of personal taste. Elevating anyone’s style can be attributed to a signature accessory, like a wardrobe stable or a well-frequented restaurant – which he recommends, serving him more utility. One accessory that is distinct on its own is the cocktail. Foremost, to drink responsibly is most attractive – a personal cocktail choice can become your signature and give a cache to his expressive style.

Men of fashion, including stylists, designers, influencers, and tastemakers, are settling into the casual cocktail culture. These men are finding inspiration in creating cocktails with personalized flare. Home aesthetics and mindful activities have been raved about since the pandemic, shifting living habits for many. More so, men are showing off their style and distinguished habits.

Earlier this summer, celebrity fashion designer LaQuan Smith created ‘the’ summer cocktail “The Remy Sidecar” with spirits brand Remy Martin. Since launching his namesake line in 2013, Smith crafted the “LaQuan Smith 3D leggings” and became known as the “leggings” guy and would go on to dress celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga, while displaying elegant personal style on his Instagram account. “The campaign is special because it asks us to own the best part of each day in our own ways and celebrates creativity! For me, this happens when the right people, music, drinks, and styles combine.”

Like wearing sunglasses at night, Smith debuted this new accessory

Lab Made Diamonds Trending as an Eco Friendlier Diamond

  • August 29, 2022

Although “cultured” diamonds have been around since the 1950s, they’ve only recently begun to gain popularity in the mainstream jewelry market. And, as more people become aware of the many benefits of Lab Grown Diamonds, it’s likely that their popularity will continue to increase.

It’s no secret that sustainable living is on the rise. More and more people are looking for ways to live a lifestyle that has a minimal impact on the environment. And when it comes to jewelry, lab-grown diamonds are a great option for those who want to be eco-conscious.

What Are Lab-Made Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds that are created in a laboratory. Although they are not mined from the earth, they have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as diamonds that are mined.

Lab-made diamonds are created using two different methods: high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

The HPHT method is the most common way that lab-grown diamonds are created. It involves using a seed diamond, which is placed in a chamber with a metal catalyst. Then, high pressure and high temperature are used to encourage the growth of the diamond.

The CVD method also uses a seed diamond, but it’s placed in a chamber with plasma gas. This gas breaks down into carbon atoms, which then attach to the seed diamond and cause it to grow.

Lab-grown diamonds can be created in a matter of weeks, whereas natural diamonds can take millions of years to form.

If you’re not sure where to buy lab-grown diamonds for the first time, Rare Carat is the place for you. With a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and clarity options, you’re sure to find the perfect diamond for you.

Within the first minute of speaking to her, I know there’s something special about Allison Lang.

Her infectious smile pops up on my laptop screen, and I immediately feel at ease. She ties her hair back, asks about my day, and apologizes for the clutter behind her (which I can assure you was no mess at all).

And while I’m grateful that technology that allows us to connect virtually, I have an overwhelming desire to meet her in person. To shake her hand and thank her for teaching women everywhere to love their authentic selves, no matter what you look like.

“I think that if we truly start to appreciate who we are authentically, we can learn to not judge ourselves so harshly.”

In an interview with Yahoo Canada, the Montréal-based athlete and public speaker opened up about her hard-fought disability journey — a path that’s been filled with trials, tribulations and stories so heartbreaking they almost don’t seem real.

But if there’s one thing Lang knows for sure, it’s that her dark past has paved the way to an enlightened future — one of positivity, acceptance and unwavering confidence.
