The 2024 Oscars’ best fashion moments

  • March 18, 2024

The biggest night in film brought out the biggest stars for the Oscars on Sunday. Celebrities gathered to celebrate the best films of the year while stepping out in couture style. While some won the beloved golden trophy, here’s who won the award for best looks.

Carey Mulligan

Nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Maestro, Mulligan stunned in a 1951 archived vintage Balenciaga gown. The strapless black dress cinched at the waist with a sweetheart neckline, and flared at the base into flowy white tulle train.

This classic look was paired with black gloves that reflect the golden age of Hollywood and Fred Leighton sparkling diamond studs hidden behind her curled bob hairstyle. The ensemble is a sweet nod to her character — Felicia Montealegre Bernstein  —  the ‘50s film actress and wife of Leonard Bernstein.

Anya Taylor-Joy

The actress dazzled in a strapless Dior Haute Couture gown embellished with gorgeous silver beading along the gown’s scalloped, petal-like skirt.

The silver theme was tied together with a simple but stunning Tiffany & Co spiked diamond necklace paired with matching earrings. The gown took inspiration from Botticelli’s painting, The Birth of Venus,’ which was originally used as inspiration for Dior in its autumn/winter 1949/50 collection and took a modern look for the Oscars red carpet.

Lily Gladstone

The actress, nominated for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon, owned the red carpet in a gown designed by Gucci creative director Sabato De Sarno and Indigenous artist Joe Big Mountain of Ironhorse Quillwork. The deep blue velvet strapless gown was a nod to her Native heritage, paired with a beaded neckline and a flowing cape with white floral quillwork. Tying the piece together was a beaded necklace and flower-shaped earrings to match

Lisa Rinna looked like a gothic goddess at the 2023 Fashion Awards.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, 60, graced the red carpet in a spiky Chet Lo gown at the Monday, December 4, awards in London. The off-the-shoulder design featured thorns at her neckline, sleeves and skirt. She accessorized with diamond hoop earrings and studded heels.

Rinna made the look even more eccentric with a sharp hairdo that saw her pitch-black strands gelled up in different directions. For glam, she rocked smokey black eyeshadow, filled-in eyebrows, a sharp contour, long lashes and glossy lips.

Rinna and designer Lo, 25, posed together on the red carpet while opening up about the look.

Tania Shroff attended the British Fashion Awards 2023 wearing a millions-worth diamond necklace

  • December 6, 2023

The highlight of Shroff’s outfit, the pièce de résistance, was her jewellery and the fun eyewear featuring an arrow. Accompanying the glasses was a beautifully crafted diamond-encrusted suite from Bucherer’s Fine Jewellery coffers. A necklace which was constructed in 18-carat gold and included pear and emerald-cut diamonds and a matching pair of earrings added the statement element to her fire-engine red ensemble.

The sparkle didn’t end there, Shroff paired this price-on-request high-value item with a whole stack of sparkly rings that felt wishlist-worthy for jewellery lovers. If one were to make their red carpet debut at one fashion‘s big nights, expensive jewellery is one definite way to stand out. A departure from antiquated designs, the modern circle structure of the necklace provided a refreshing and youthful approach to red carpet jewellery, where previously, classic designs like that of amulet-style gargantuan centre stones have primarily dominated.

The billionaire heiress who has previously shown a penchant for choosing bling that crosses the boundaries of hype by pairing an equally brilliant necklace with a casual button-down, brings a new perception of luxury to the fashion game.

Elle Fanning has established herself as a red carpet style star. Marc Piasecki/FilmMagic

Elle Fanning has been working in Hollywood since she was just a toddler. Making her film debut at just two years old (playing the younger version of her big sister, Dakota, in the 2001 film, I Am Sam), Fanning already had dozens of on-screen credits to her name by the time of her breakout role in Maleficent at 16 years old. Of course, she’d displayed her style expertise with plenty of red carpet looks, too, which helped her win over fashion brands early on in her career.

In 2011, American designer Marc Jacobs chose Fanning as the face of his upcoming Marc by Marc Jacobs campaign, and later that year, the actress starred in a short film for sister duo Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s latest Rodarte collection. It was also around this time that Fanning began working with her longtime stylist Samantha McMillen, establishing herself as a style star before she even graduated high school.

Though she’s never been afraid of taking fashion risks with bright colors or unexpected silhouettes, Fanning is undoubtedly a modern-day master of Old Hollywood elegance on the red carpet—it makes perfect sense, as she previously named Grace Kelly as one of her style icons. It’s this chameleon-like ability of adopting fashion personas as diverse as her on-screen portrayals of historical figures, including Catherine the Great and fairy tale princesses like Aurora, that piqued the interest of luxury fashion and jewelry houses.

Fanning landed Miu Miu and Tiffany & Co. campaigns while still in her teens, before being named

15 Fashion Triumphs From Cannes Over the Decades

  • May 15, 2023

If the Met Gala is the all-star showcase of red carpet entrances, the Oscars the skills championship, and the MTV Video Music Awards the X Games, then the Cannes Film Festival is effectively the playoffs: an extended period in which celebrities show up multiple times in clothes high and low, demonstrating all their moves.

And though outfits seem to be getting increasingly extreme with the proliferation of social media, a look back through the history of the festival’s runway (oops, red carpet) — which this year runs May 16-27 — reveals that it was, in fact, ever thus.

The Croisette boulevard has always been a catwalk and we, the rapt audience looking on.

1957

When she attended Cannes on the arm of her third husband, the producer Mike Todd (who was there to promote “Around the World in 80 Days”), Ms. Taylor was Hollywood royalty, and she dressed the part — from the tip of her diamond Cartier tiara to the hem of her white Balmain gown and the fingertips of her opera gloves. The princess dress would forever after be a festival staple (not least on Princesses Grace and Diana when they would take their own Cannes bows).

1966

Ms. Deneuve attended Cannes with her then-husband, the photographer David Bailey, in a long seaside-striped sequin Yves Saint Laurent T-shirt dress. She was a de facto YSL ambassador before that term had even entered the fashion playbook (back then, the usual appellation was “muse”). She would remain one for decades, loyally wearing YSL onscreen and off. When it comes to casual glamour, however, this dress set the tone, proving the concept was not an oxymoron, but a whole potential genre unto itself.

1974

Ms. Birkin popped up at Cannes with her beau, Serge

At the NFL draft, players share the stage with fashion

  • May 3, 2023

HOUSTON — Deion Sanders became the NFL draft’s first fashion icon by accessorizing a black and white track suit with loads of sparkling gold jewelry and dark shades when he took the call from the Atlanta Falcons before they selected him fifth overall in 1989.

As memorable as Sanders’ draft swag remains, wearing a track suit on draft night or the jean shorts Brett Favre wore would be scoffed at today with top players gathering for a televised event that has become as much runway show as sporting event.

While top prospects in this year’s draft like quarterbacks Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson and defensive lineman Will Anderson Jr. prepare their fits for the big night, we look back at some of the most memorable draft night ensembles since the splash by Sanders.

Ray Lewis chose a flashy Versace look when the Ravens took him in the first round in 1996. The linebacker rocked a silk shirt, belt and sunglasses by the designer with white slacks as he helped usher in the move from casual draft night clothes to more sophisticated looks.

Over the next decade, most players made the transition to suits, but they were more going to church with your grandma looks than high fashion statement pieces.

Then came 2016 and running back Ezekiel Elliott’s bold choice of a crop top tuxedo shirt when the Dallas Cowboys took him fourth overall. He stunned on the red carpet when he unbuttoned his suit jacket to reveal his bare, toned abs, raising the bar for draft night fashion surprises.

The following season, safety Jamal Adams shined in a white windowpane patterned, double-breasted suit when he was taken at No. 6 by the Jets.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson took a page out of Lewis’s book by going designer head to
